After completing dental school, dentists take care of patients' overall oral health. They provide preventive services, such as cleaning and sealants, along with restorative procedures, including fillings. Orthodontists continue their education after completing dental school. Orthodontists are trained to detect and treat dental abnormalities. Orthodontists treat various alignment issues for patients of all ages.
Children should go to the orthodontist by the age of seven. The orthodontist will look for issues that could create alignment or bite problems when the permanent teeth erupt. Orthodontists treat people of all ages, so even those who did not go as children can still benefit from an appointment with the orthodontist.
Many people think that crooked teeth are merely a cosmetic issue. Improperly aligned or crowded teeth would cause other concerns. It is hard to clean teeth that are not correctly spaced or aligned. Misaligned bites also put extra stress on the teeth, gums, and bones. In addition, some people experience problems eating and speaking due to orthodontic problems.
It is normal to experience some slight discomfort right after getting braces or aligners. Patients may experience discomfort after a visit. However, it should not last long.
Treatment is customized for each patient. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the alignment issue. Some patients finish treatment in as little as three months. Others undergo treatment for 30 months.
An orthodontist is not a replacement for your dentist. Your general dentist will help you maintain your oral health while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Visit your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning. Then when you are done with orthodontic treatment, your teeth will be white and clean.
The cost of treatment depends on the option selected and the severity of the issue. Orthodontic insurance can absorb some of the treatment cost. There are also payment plans available to make it easier to pay for treatment. During your consultation, the team will go over the rates and options with you.
