Caring for Braces During a Quarantine

05/15/2020

If you are currently in the middle of orthodontic treatment, you may be wondering how long it will be before you can get in to see your orthodontist. Since COVID-19 makes it challenging for orthodontists to see their patients, it is important to have tips for caring for braces during a quarantine.

Caring for Braces During a Quarantine

Avoid Potential Problems

Prevention is critical for caring for braces during a quarantine. At the beginning of your orthodontic journey, you were given a list of foods to avoid. The off-limit foods typically include popcorn and nuts, as well as hard, crunchy foods. Sticky foods, like caramel, were likely on your list, too. These types of food are problematic because they can damage the brackets of your braces. During the quarantine, orthodontist offices are likely closed or are only able to see a few patients a day. If you avoid foods that cause problems, you are unlikely to need emergency care with the orthodontist.

Also, try to avoid drinking beverages that can stain your teeth. Use a straw if dark-colored beverages are unavoidable. Also, sugary drinks interact with the bacteria that are naturally in your mouth, which creates the perfect environment for tartar to develop. If you cannot brush your teeth after sugary drinks, rinse your mouth out with water.

Focus on Oral Health

While under quarantine, it is essential to practice good oral hygiene. It is easy to get out of habits when your routine is altered. However, make sure you brush your teeth at least two times a day. It is even better if you brush after every meal and snack, though. You will want to take your time to ensure you clean all around the brackets, too. Food particles and the bacteria in your mouth will turn into plaque and tartar if left alone.

Flossing is an essential step for caring for braces during a quarantine, as well. Do not skip this step, as flossing dislodges the food stuck in between the teeth that your brush cannot reach. Furthermore, when you brush and floss, you are more likely to avoid bad breath.
