COMMON PROBLEMS

Orthodontics can treat a variety of problems ranging from mild to severe. Look at some of the most common orthodontic problems our office handles. If your issue is not listed, that does not mean that we cannot provide treatment. Contact our office to learn more.

UNDERBITES

Underbites are a common predicament we treat. Underbites occur when the lower jaw extends farther than it should. This moves the lower teeth in front of the upper teeth.

OVERBITES

Overbites are also common. Overbites occur when the upper teeth extend out far past the lower teeth. If the issue is severe, the lower teeth might hit the roof of the mouth when biting.

CROSSBITES

Your upper teeth should sit on the outside of your lower teeth when you close your mouth. If they sit on the inside instead of the outside, you have a crossbite. This can occur on one or both sides of the mouth. A crossbite can cause your teeth to wear down. It can also cause problems with your shoulders, neck, and jaw.

OPEN BITE

An open bite is diagnosed when the top and bottom front teeth don’t meet when you close your mouth. If you have an open bite, you also might experience speech problems such as a lisp. This can be corrected with orthodontic treatment.

SPACED TEETH

Some people have wide spaces between their teeth because they’ve had teeth extracted. In other cases, it is an alignment issue. Both problems can be corrected with orthodontic treatment.

OVERCROWDING

When teeth don’t have enough room to erupt, overcrowding occurs. When detected early, an orthodontist can use a palatal expander. This increases the space for the teeth. Overcrowding can also be corrected later in life.

MISALIGNED DENTAL MIDLINES

Your back bite should fit together. This won’t happen if your dental midlines are misaligned. Misaligned dental midlines make it difficult for the jaw to grow properly. It can also make it hard to chew. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment will correct this problem.
